A solar power station in every region in France by 2011

France – Bernard Kouchner, Minister of Ecology, has launched a call on Friday for national construction of at least one solar power plant per region by 2011. It aims at a combined 300 megawatts.

“Everything is accelerating, solar has become an illustration of green growth,” said Jean-Louis Borloo to AFP.

Establish a photovoltaic region represents an investment of about 1.5 billion euros and the Minister of Ecology has launched a regional tender in order to avoid a “competitive differential”. The tender is aimed at fourteen distinct zones depending on their level of sunlight.

Applications must be submitted before 21 December and will be evaluated according to their environmental quality and their contribution to research and innovation. The presence in the landscape will be paramount, as well as the limitation of the surface immobilized by the facility.

The goal: to produce 400 times more electricity from solar energy “by 2020″ said Jean-Louis Borloo.
