Cannabis can affect DNA
The United Kingdom – the team of Dr. Singh of the university of Leicester highlighted the negative impact of the consumption of cannabis on the DNA, the damage created by this drug being able to increase the cancer risk.
The toxicity of tobacco has been the subject of many studies. The composition of the tobacco smoke and its cancerogenic components are known. The smoke of cannabis, however, not been studied extensively and, for Dr. Singh, its association with the tobacco makes it more toxic than tobacco itself.
Through a new technique, researchers were able to study the formation of a DNA damaging composed of cells of calf thymus when it is exposed to cannabis smoke in-vitro. The acetaldehyde, present in tobacco and cannabis, would be responsible.
The fact that the smokers of cannabis inhale smoke more deeply than those smoking of the cigarettes increases the toxic load in the respiratory system. The researchers explain that to smoke three to four joints of cannabis per day causes the same damage to the bronchi than twenty cigarettes daily.
This study shows the dangers of the cannabis for the health, the damage caused on the DNA and the bronchi strongly increasing the risk of development of a cancer.
