Chewing gums with nicotine: useless before you stop smoking?
According to the team of Dr. Etter, University of Geneva, to chew chewing gum with nicotine in order to reduce the consumption of cigarettes before quitting would be completely useless.
The aim of the study, according to the website Créapharm was whether preparation for quitting smoking with chewing gum, patches and other nicotine replacement was beneficial for smokers wishing to quit smoking. They conducted a test with 314 participants who were separated into two groups.
The first group of people had to chew nicotine gum for four weeks when they reduced their consumption of tobacco. The second group received their first chewings-gum only with the final adoption of the cigarette.
One year after the study, 20.8% of participants in the first group and 19.4% in the second had stopped smoking. The success rate is higher for those who stopped smoking for one day to another.
These results are surprising researchers who believe that a firm decision to quit would be more effective than gradual, facilitating relapse.
