Facebook on the ground of Twitter

27 June 2009 One Comment

facebookThe social network Facebook is reviewing its capacity to publication in order to give members more control over who can have access to updates, photos and messages that are issued on the platform. With some of these additions, Facebook ranks as a direct competitor to Twitter.

New features, still in “beta” stage, just to be announced Wednesday on the Facebook blog. A better control will make it possible for example, for example the photos of children can only be seen by a list of family members.

Conversely, one of the most significant changes is to encourage the members of Facebook to share their messages with the world instead of a small group of friends.Facebook also emphasizes elements of “real time” explicitly microblogging services like Twitter. With this new feature, a member of Facebook will be able to make content visible in all site of the members.

I don’t see the need for additional safeguards on facebook. We already have a number of them in place. Here are a few ways you can be sure privacy on facebook
      • Group your friends and use these as tags. Make sure you have separate privacy policies applicable to them.
      • Make sure you make yourself invisible from facebook search results. You can do this by selecting ‘only friends’ under the ‘search visibility’ button of ‘search privacy settings’ on facebook.
      • You can get added privacy from Google searches by changing the privacy settings I mentioned above.
      • You can also safeguard photos by visiting the profile privacy page, modifying the settings under ‘photos tagged of you’ and then selecting ‘customize-only me and none of my networks’.
There are other tricks you can try to increase privacy to your facebook profile.
