The secrets of a 2000 years old mummy revealed by a scanner

mummySydney, Australia – Archaeologists of New York and Sydney were able to penetrate the secrets of identity and the conservation of several Egyptian mummies by analyzing detailed images obtained by medical imaging.

Researchers from a private clinic in Sydney have produced remarkable images that identified the mummy belonging to the Nicholson Museum in Sydney, without deteriorating it. The scanner rotated around the subject and took 64 shots per second at 10 mm intervals. A computer then built an image in 3D, by aligning all scans one above the other.

Michael Turner, curator of the Nicholson Museum says: “The images are impressive. We learned more of them than 150 years of studies from the skins. We can not say yet what was the cause of the death, but with new advancing technologies, it will be possible in the coming years, “he added.

The mummy dates from the 2nd century AD and is a native of Thebes, a city on the banks of the Nile about 800 km from the Mediterranean. After his death, the boy had been washed with essential oils. His internal organs were removed and placed in the body of salt to dry before being surrounded by strips.

“The bones were in the same state as the death of the person. One could even distinguish the small bones of the middle ear, which are the smallest bones of the human body, “says Dr. Margaret Stewart of the private clinic in Sydney. “I am impressed by the ability of Egyptians to preserve the body. Even today, it would be extremely difficult to achieve such a thing. ”

It was thought that the mummy is a corpse of a girl named Horuth but the new images of the scanner confirm that it is a boy named Horus. According to Janet Davey, coroner and Egyptologist who studied the images, the boy was certainly from a wealthy family to be offered such a process of mummification. Moreover, it seems covered with a thin layer of gold, which proves his wealth and status.
