The longest tunnel in the world will be Swiss
Switzerland – The future construction will shorten the transit time between Zurich and Milan.
For years, the Alps have served as a natural barrier between northern and southern Europe.
Sending Italian wine to the Netherlands or German washing machines in Greece turned out to be painful because it meant traveling on roads winding through the valleys of the Alps. It was through many tunnels and confront all mounted.
Nevertheless, the quantity of goods passing through the Alps has risen sharply over the past two decades. It was considered that the best solution to the problem of saturation was the development of piggyback, especially following fire tunnels involving trucks.
The Swiss are currently building a rail at high speed with Milan, which includes a tunnel 57 km long. The entire line is situated at an altitude of 500 meters above the sea and the future may ride on train 240 km / h, connecting Milan to Zurich in just two and a half hours instead of four now.
The project is enormous: 2,000 people working 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Although the initial budget has more than likely be exceeded, the work continues and should soon make the barrier of the Alps.
