The sky, the ultimate limit of wind energy?

The United States – the wind energy which will feed the New York in the future could perhaps result from large “kites”, hovering high over the city.

wind turbineResearchers at U.S. universities think it would be very interesting to exploit the power of high-altitude winds over New York. It was suggested that these winds could provide enough electricity to power 100 times the current needs of mankind.

These winds called jet streams blows much stronger and more constant than the surface winds. Ideally, it would be necessary to be able to collect them towards 30,000 feet of altitude (approximately 9000 meters). These are drafts blowing rapidly between 6,000 and 15,000 meters. If their configuration changes according to the seasons, they remain rather constant and especially, ten times faster than the winds blowing close to the ground.

Several projects have been put forward to harvest the energy they could provide, including large wind turbines in the form of kites. The current designs would generate about 40 megawatts of electricity, which would then be transmitted to the ground by cables connecting these devices to the ground.

Some cities such as Tokyo, Seoul or New York, have huge energy resources in high altitude. Others such as Mexico City or Sao Paulo, because of their position in the tropics, do not have that opportunity.
