The warming climate led to the emergence of animal diseases

1 June 2009 No Comment
World – According to a study conducted by experts from the International Organization for Animal Health (OIE), climate change is the cause of the emergence of animal diseases transmissible to humans.

“More and more countries are attributed to climate change the appearance of at least one disease emerging or re-emerging, cracking or sway in their territory. It is a reality that we can not ignore and that we have to assist the veterinary services around the world to establish structures that meet international standards of good governance to deal “confirms Bernard Vallat, Director General of the OIE.

126 OIE member countries, out of 174, participated in this study and three diseases cause particular concern among health authorities. This is the bluetongue (disease of the blue tongue), fever, Rift Valley, which affects mainly cattle, and West Nile fever more commonly known as yellow fever. Nearly 60% of them attributed to climate change emerging or re-emergence of animal diseases but also the fact that they spread more and more geographically.

In an attempt to curb this phenomenon, the OIE calls the various organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the United Nations for the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), to work together to carry out further actions in research, capacity building national health systems in public and private. “

It also implement important means of communication to “prevent or reduce the effects of climate change on animal production and diseases including those transmissible to humans.”
