Australia: the town of Bundanoon banned water bottles
Bundanoon, Australia – The town of Bundanoon, a city of Australia has decided to ban the sale and use of bottled water to act for the preservation of the environment. The 2500 inhabitants of the city have voted for the measure almost unanimously.
People in the Australian city of New South Wales have voted to completely ban their sale and use. Only one resident voted againstat the poll held in the town hall.
Bundanoon is the first town in the world that creates such a measure for environmental protection and natural resources. The city thus hopes to significantly reduce its carbon footprint associated with transporting and bottling mineral water.
Local businesses in the city now distribute reusable bottles instead of disposable classic bottles.
“The bottled water has a role to play in many parts of Australia and many parts of the world but we do not really need as far as we have a very important municipal water supply,” says Huw Kingston, a businessman who led the campaign. He added: “We are not a handful of ecologists, but we just want to show that we can work together as a community for sustainable development.”
This measure will not only make it possible for the residents of the city to reduce their carbon footprint, they also realize real savings by using tap water rather than bottled water. In 2008, Australians spent about $ 500 million bottles of water, 10% more than in 2007.
