Breakfast with skimmed milk helps to maintain weight
Perth, Australia – Researchers at the University of Western Australia have shown that breakfast with skimmed milk helps to maintain weight or lose weight, providing a greater satiety.
The test was conducted with thirty-four overweight or obese people. A one week apart, participants took two breakfasts to 713 calories. One consisted of 600 ml of fruit drink made with concentrate, the other 600 ml of skimmed milk.
After a few hours, participants were offered their own choise to eat the food they like. Between these two meals, they were subjected to tests on their appetite and their satiety. Those who had breakfast with milk were less hungry before lunch and therefore ate less at lunch.
The tests are not accurate and Passport Health confirms that the statistics are in extreme cases of the significant result. Despite everything, the researchers believes that the proteins of milk or the lactose could have an effect “cut-hunger”. Milk contains casein and whey, and lactose is a natural sugar in milk.
Skimmed milk contains only thirty-six grams of carbohydrates like lactose, whereas fruit drinks contain sixty-three grams of carbohydrates like fructose, glucose and sucrose. Lactose would therefore tend to satisfy and encourage them to eat less. Researchers have already shown that calcium and dairy products including milk helps lose more weight.
