The factors in the development of Rheumatoid arthritis
France – A study by a team from the Lapeyronie Montpellier hospital shows that the development of Rheumatoid arthritis is different depending on the season of diagnosis, oral hygiene and smoking.
The development of Rheumatoid arthritis is less unfavorable if it is diagnosed in summer or spring. The radiographic progression of joint damage is slower during these seasons. Lack of vitamin D in winter due to lack of sun and environmental factors, such as viruses circulating at this time, would explain this phenomenon.
A person suffering from periodontal disease, an infection of the tissues that support the teeth, would have a higher risk of developing a Rheumatoid arthritis. Le Point says that, Genetic factors can promote the occurrence of severe forms of Rheumatoid arthritis, just like smoking.
Among the 5,400 participants, only 33 have developed Rheumatoid arthritis. 27 of these 33 people were suffering from moderate to severe periodontitis.
The study proves the link between periodontal disease and Rheumatoid arthritis. The importance of good dental hygiene is essential in preventing this disease.
