DNA tests on the Internet: a booming market
USA – The approval of a new DNA test was presented as the most reliable and least expensive, is controversial in the market for this type of testing where competition is fierce.
PathAway Genomics, located in San Diego, California, offers a new DNA test to approximately € 176 to determine the potential risks of diseases such as diabetes or Alzheimer’s disease. If the test receives federal and local approval in the United States, orders from abroad will be huge.
The test is bought on Internet, the provided kit makes it possible to collect saliva before returning the samples to the laboratory for an analysis of genetic inheritance. Another company 23andme proposed a test in 2006 for 706 €, whose price is now decreased to € 282. Recent promotions have lowered the price of this test to 69 €. At deCODEme, the “all inclusive” test is offered at 696 €.
The U.S. administration is concerned about the direct sale of these tests, some require more control to ensure the reliability of results and their use. Some insurers might indeed refuse to cover people with certain genetic abnormalities resulting in diseases.
The United States and Iceland are the only countries in the world to allow commercial use of these tests which are widely used in the judicial field.
