Global Warming: Canada designated as the worst student of G8
In partnership with the financial group Allianz, WWF published a ranking of the G8 countries on the fight against global warming. Canada is proving to be the worst student while Germany climbed onto the first step of the podium.
At one week of the G8 Summit to be held in Italy, WWF published the ranking of the eight most industrialized countries in the fight against global warming, every year.
“Every country has taken steps but they are not sufficient to maintain the average increase in global temperatures below the critical threshold of 2 ° C compared to pre-industrial levels” deplores the report before clarifying that only Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Russia met their Kyoto targets.
According to this classification, which measures the efforts and achievements since 1990 as the policies and commitments, Germany is the best student of the year, while the United Kingdom and France respectively mounted on the second and third step of the podium.
Despite increasing their emissions of greenhouse gases since 1999, Russia is in fourth position ahead of Japan and Italy. “If their emissions are relatively weak, their current policy will not make it possible to reduce them more” indicates the report
The two bad boys of the G8 are the United States who occupy the penultimate position, and Canada in dead last because of the increased emissions of greenhouse gases, which remain among the highest in the world per capita.
The authors conclude their report by calling the “Global Leaders of the G8 to ensure the success of Copenhagen”. The summit, held in December, needs to reach a new agreement to replace the Kyoto Protocol in 2012.
