The number of surrogate mothers increasing in the United States
United States – gestation for others, or pregnancy by surrogate mother, has become a great demand, both for couples wishing to start a family on the side of women willing to bear children.
“To rent” the belly of a woman against money so that it carries the child of another couple, is not a legal practice in all the States of the United States. Each stat has its own legislation concerning gestation for others and the States of New York and the New Jersey for example prohibited it.
In Pennsylvania, where the practice is permitted, the lawyer Melissa Brisman negotiates contracts very specific on the rights and duties of the surrogate mother and parents. Although every year about 6,000 children are officially from gestation to others, they are actually much larger number because many are not recorded. These cases relate to non-identified or homosexual couples from countries where the practice is prohibited, such as France.
Pregnancy may relate to other couples whose wife has suffered heavy medical treatment and for whom pregnancy may be dangerous. The patient may then request a sample of eggs to be frozen for a future pregnancy. The biological parents provide medical expenses and regular income to the surrogate mother from insemination until the birth of the child. The surrogate mother loses all rights over the child, usually before the delivery.
Because some mothers sometimes refuse to leave the child brought into the world. Law firms like Melissa Brisman conducts psychological testing and medical examinations to these surrogate mothers. Her office receives 50 to 100 applications per week but only five or six women were selected.
