England – A new field of machinery designed to produce energy through the waves and tides will be born in the south-west of the country. It will make this site a new leader in the market for technologies whose power comes from the sea.

The construction of this new project, called Wave Hub, will be carried out on the seabed off Cornwall. It will be supported by a government plan aimed at creating a new major area of ocean energy. The British Minister of Labor, Lord Mandelson, has already announced an investment of 9.5 million pounds for a project that will create 1,800 jobs.

The Wave Hub will be the first project of this type near the British coast to allow the creation of energy through waves and will be able to produce electricity from this energy. It is already seen as the first Low Carbon Economic Area of the country and has received support from the South West Regional Development Agency (RDA).

The head of enterprise and innovation RDA Stephen Peacock, said that this project will be an unprecedented opportunity for the region. To make this zone as the first low carbon emitting area is a tremendous tribute to him.

Stephen Peacock also reiterated that he wanted to forge a new industry from the seas surrounding England. The announcements made on this project affirm its desire to make this area of England as the world leader in technologies based on energy from waves and tides.

According to him, industrial strategies aiming at limiting the release of carbon, also offer a wide range of opportunities that will ultimately reap the benefits of a global market which could worth several million pounds by 2015.

Ten million books have already been granted by the RDA to the project. It will bring together several facilities including one built under the sea, connected with several others to which it will distribute its energy. The European Regional Development Fund Convergence Program has also promised to invest 20 million pounds in the Wave Hub next summer.

The construction of the first structures of the Wave Hub has already begun. The total investment promised by the RDA, the private funds and public could reach 100 million pounds.
