Venice offers Wi-Fi to all its inhabitants
Italy – The city of Venice wants to merge science and culture. This initiative on the Internet is only the start of a huge project.
Venice has just launched the public wireless Internet facility, largest in Europe. Thousands of kilometers of cables were laid. Wi-Fi is now available in some areas across the city.
The authorities have spent about 11 million for the construction of the whole network. It is provides a speed of around 20 to 100 megabits per second. It is free for residents but tourists should pay a few euros per day for access.
Venice is usually more famous for its history and its architectural beauty, but the mayor of the city wants to promote the development of a modernity based on e-commerce and cable television. Other cities more advanced in the field of Wi-Fi are San Francisco, Singapore and Stockholm.
