The benefits of organic products on health – questioned

organic products_imgA study conducted by British researchers at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), organic products may not be more beneficial to health than conventional foods, their nutritional intake is almost similar.

According to a study published on July 28 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, food from organic farming would not be healthier than other fruits, vegetables, meat or fish. Researchers examined 162 scientific reports published over the last fifty years to meet the request of the British food agency (the Food Standards Agency) which commissioned the study.

“We have established that there was a small number of differences in nutritional intake between crops and livestock products in organic and conventional products” indicates Professor Alan Dangour before specifying: “It is unlikely they are relevant to public health. ”

The only real difference lies in the use of pesticides and fertilizers which changes the acidity of the products.

Pointing out the superiority of organic food prices, Alan Dangour concluded there was “currently no evidence to support a selection of organic products on the basis of superior nutrition.”

Following the publication of this study, the Commission on Sustainable Development stresses the positive impact of organic farming on the environment and regrets that it was not taken into account in the work of researchers. “The farming is an integrated approach that preserves the soil, encourages biodiversity, eliminates emissions of greenhouse gases, maintaining genetic diversity and provides more income to the farmer”, recalled Andrew Lee in a letter published by the Guardian.
