The depth of the sunspots has been measured for the first time

Astronomers from the University of Glasgow have reported that they were able to measure the depth of sunspots. Back in 1769 while studying spots on the surface of the solar disk, a professor at the University of Glasgow, Alexander Wilson said that the sun spots appears to be concave.
In their study, the researchers used data collected by the mission SOHO. This device was launched in 1995, specifically for observing the Sun, and it had succeeded in obtaining the large number of photographs of heavenly body during the peak of its …

Scientists discovered the lightning discharges on Mars for the first time

Dust storms on Mars are accompanied by lightning discharges, for the first time revealed signs of electrical discharges on the planet with a new detector that is installed on a terrestrial radio system, Deep Space Networ.
Although scientists have been virtually assured of the existence of lightning on Mars, to detect them using direct observation has not yet succeeded. Only now, the new detector installed on a 34-meter radio telescope, scientists were able to make it clear that Dusty storm on Mars On 8 June 2006 was accompanied by lightning discharges …

Mars 500 experiment: End of 105 days of confinement for 6 astronauts

Russia – The six men involved in the Mars 500 experiment have just left their sealed laboratory in Moscow. They had not seen sunlight for more than 3 months.
March 500 was a simulated space mission organized by the European Space Agency (ESA). Its goal: to reproduce a future voyage of astronauts towards red planet.
The six crew members were used as guinea pigs for researchers who studied the psychological and medical aspects of such a long mission. The volunteers have spent 105 days in a large capsule isolated from the outside …

The Herschel telescope delivers new images: surprise!

With its 3.5 meter diameter, Herschel is currently the largest telescope installed in space, orbiting the second Lagrange point. Its instruments, with which it can scan the universe in the infrared, extending from 60 to 670 micrometers, are undergoing their first full test in space. New images make astronomers very optimistic about the future of the mission.
Herschel was launched last May 14 and, like Planck, its destination was an orbit around the L2 Lagrange point, approximately 1.5 million kilometers from Earth. There Herschel revolves around the sun still up in …
